So, I accepted a clerkship with a judge on the Colorado Court of Appeals today.

(I was really hoping for the Colo. Supreme Court, but boxed myself in, timing-wise - interviewed with this judge too early, so I had to give him an answer before anyone on the Supreme Court was hiring. And I'm not going to turn down the sure thing!)

On the plus side, I've heard nothing but good things about the judge (one of his former clerks and another former colleague worked at the firm I worked for this summer), he also has a permanent clerk who seemed super nice and I'll be happy to work with (she'll know what I'm supposed to do!!), and I really liked the way his chambers is set up - he seems to take mentoring really seriously.

Plus, he used to practice employment law, which is a field that interests me, so that can't hurt, right?

Funny story, though - he's sort of reserved. His former clerk warned me that he's not the most outgoing person, that when he asks, "How was your weekend?", he really just wants to hear "fine," not drawn out details about your life. She described him as someone who understands that there are social niceties like small talk, so does his duty, so to speak, but isn't really interested.

Anyway, I forget how we got to this point - I think it was part of the conversation where he told me he wants his clerks to have some kind of work experience before law school, rather than just being a professional student. And then also that it's important for people to be able to work together, or something. So then he told me about the applicant who "used to be in the restaurant business, who was rather loud, and boisterous. The kind of person," he said with a shudder, "who you know would tell you a joke every time you came in."

I just thought that was kind of funny, that his nightmare was a clerk who would insist on telling him jokes!

(Everyone has confirmed that he's a bit socially awkward, but great to work for regardless. That's fine - I'm looking for a job, not a new best friend! And the career clerk is super nice and outgoing. Plus, if tradition holds, I'd bet at least half of the other COA clerks will be from my graduating class, so I can get my social fix elsewhere.)

Anyway, I'd mentioned applying for clerkships, so I thought I'd report back. (And it's a little awkward announcing this to people at school - totally accidentally, I was talking to someone in one of my classes yesterday about clerking, she asked if I had a clerkship, I said yes and explained a little, and it turns out that she was the person next in line for the position, if I turned him down. Ooops. Small world. VERY awkward. I mean, she was cool about it, but I felt AWFUL. So I thought I'd post here, where I don't think any of you were applying for the same job!)

Congrats! That is a great accomplishment. I am sure you will do great!

I am 6 months out from the bar and have no solid job prospects yet. Here's to hoping...

Thanks, all!

tonyg, I'm sure you'll find something - there are tons of employers who won't even look at you until after you've taken the bar.

Way to go and a real good lesson on job-hunting. You should add that you will be interacting a lot with senior agency and firm lawyers from all over the state, something that won't hurt the long-term job search. (The nice thing about working as or for a judge is that firms are always looking for an edge and insight into a court's thinking. My dad gets paid now by his firm just to share his 30 years on the bench with the firm's trial lawyers!) ;\)

Also a good "Miss Manners" moment. A year plus ago when a group of us met we learned that everyone without a job had all interviewed for the exact same list of openings. Even for all you 1L folks, take your bragging and relief on over here! Believe me, you don't want to be the person who got someone's dream job or who beat someone's class grade after they put, "like a zillion" hours into that class. Hang your awards at home! ;\)

That is fantastic,, way to go! Sounds like a great opportunity. I have to laugh at your description of the judge - too funny that someone would tell him jokes was his idea of a nightmare clerk. HA!

Yes, congratulations, AnnaD!

Lots of value in a clerkship. The connections are great, but should you be looking for work beyond your network, just having that on your resume gives you a near irrebuttable presumption of being able to write.

Searching for a job can be very stressful for many students nearing graduation. Unfortunately, all the education in the world doesn’t teach you how to go out and find the jobs you need and want after college, so you need to know where to look to land that dream job. When you know where to look for a job, the search simply becomes a process instead of something that will stress you out.

Way to go, Anna! You and Tonyg have just sailed through school. I'm wondering if I can pass finals next two weeks.

In May, I'm going to Chicago to meet with the vet org's atty, and my favorite 'grumpy Judge' from the 7th circuit. He wrote me back. I just want to meet him. See State Farm v. Riley. "This is it"!
