So, I accepted a clerkship with a judge on the Colorado Court of Appeals today.
(I was really hoping for the Colo. Supreme Court, but boxed myself in, timing-wise - interviewed with this judge too early, so I had to give him an answer before anyone on the Supreme Court was hiring. And I'm not going to turn down the sure thing!)
On the plus side, I've heard nothing but good things about the judge (one of his former clerks and another former colleague worked at the firm I worked for this summer), he also has a permanent clerk who seemed super nice and I'll be happy to work with (she'll know what I'm supposed to do!!), and I really liked the way his chambers is set up - he seems to take mentoring really seriously.
Plus, he used to practice employment law, which is a field that interests me, so that can't hurt, right?
Funny story, though - he's sort of reserved. His former clerk warned me that he's not the most outgoing person, that when he asks, "How was your weekend?", he really just wants to hear "fine," not drawn out details about your life. She described him as someone who understands that there are social niceties like small talk, so does his duty, so to speak, but isn't really interested.
Anyway, I forget how we got to this point - I think it was part of the conversation where he told me he wants his clerks to have some kind of work experience before law school, rather than just being a professional student. And then also that it's important for people to be able to work together, or something. So then he told me about the applicant who "used to be in the restaurant business, who was rather loud, and boisterous. The kind of person," he said with a shudder, "who you know would tell you a joke every time you came in."
I just thought that was kind of funny, that his nightmare was a clerk who would insist on telling him jokes!
(Everyone has confirmed that he's a bit socially awkward, but great to work for regardless. That's fine - I'm looking for a job, not a new best friend! And the career clerk is super nice and outgoing. Plus, if tradition holds, I'd bet at least half of the other COA clerks will be from my graduating class, so I can get my social fix elsewhere.)
Anyway, I'd mentioned applying for clerkships, so I thought I'd report back. (And it's a little awkward announcing this to people at school - totally accidentally, I was talking to someone in one of my classes yesterday about clerking, she asked if I had a clerkship, I said yes and explained a little, and it turns out that she was the person next in line for the position, if I turned him down. Ooops. Small world. VERY awkward. I mean, she was cool about it, but I felt AWFUL. So I thought I'd post here, where I don't think any of you were applying for the same job!)

Congrats! That is a great accomplishment. I am sure you will do great!
I am 6 months out from the bar and have no solid job prospects yet. Here's to hoping...

Thanks, all!
tonyg, I'm sure you'll find something - there are tons of employers who won't even look at you until after you've taken the bar.

Searching for a job can be very stressful for many students nearing graduation. Unfortunately, all the education in the world doesn’t teach you how to go out and find the jobs you need and want after college, so you need to know where to look to land that dream job. When you know where to look for a job, the search simply becomes a process instead of something that will stress you out.
