Since June, when I originally asked this question, I have went through all of the anxiety of waiting for the first day of school. Tuesday, Sept 3rd, I will be beginning classes for real, as last week was all orientation. The school itself is absolutely stunning. They built a new library and converted the old library and one other building into the law school. During this renovation they created an archetectural masterpiece. There are few straight lines, very high vaulted ceilings, beautiful views, and top of the line technology in all of the rooms, including ethernet and power connections at every seat (in classrooms and out)go to http://www.law.unlv.edu/newsandevents.html and click on the pictures. Unfortunately, for those not yet admitted, it is becomming very difficult to gain admission. They had over 1100 applications for 140 incomming spots and their yearly increases in "mean" will allow them to quickly reach their goal of becomming a 1st tier nationally recognized school in a very short time.

Where are all you UNLV nonTrads? I just got done with Torts and Contracts and it was wonderful. Both teachers were very professional in their demeanor (no put downs, disparaging remarks, etc), they were directed in the purpose of what they were lecturing on and where they wanted to go with it, knowledgeable enough about the subject matter that they could approach each response in a suportive way that would illicit another response, and both went way out of their way to let us know they would be available for us pretty much twentyfour-seven-three sixtyfive. I have talked to a number of advanced students and all of them have nothing but praise for the school and particularly the staff. I generally take these kinds of comments with a grain of salt, but if tonight is any indication I am impressed.

I'm not a UNLV student, but I've also found that my profs have none of that socratic punishment in their classes. It's all very "sure, I'm the professor, but you're all smart kids and I'm not here to belittle you". There's no tension, and the profs appear to believe that fear is not the best way to teach. I don't think that fear is the best motivator either - it motivates me to memorize details of a case, rather than examining the legal concepts in each case. I'm glad that the socratic method is dying out at other schools too.

During orientation someone had mentioned that they do get tough but only because that is what you will face in court. As 1L's we don't have to worry about court for a little while so I don't see anything wrong with letting us get our feet under us before pulling the rug out.

Oh, I wish my contracts professor was like yours, as I endured another long 75 minutes in his class today -- trying to fly under the radar (successfully, I might add!). Someone finally told him today, as he was hammering her, "you make me so nervous." Everyone in the class cracked up & it kind of lessened the tension a bit. We have a quiz at every class session & it's so hard to figure out what he wants. Whine, whine, whine, woe is me. Hooray, tomorrow is torts & property though -- I like those classes.

Granny, I'm so sorry you've got a booger for a teacher. I'm sure you will learn a lot but weighed with the mental strain I'm not sure I could agree that it's worth it. We had LP tonight, the main prof seems pretty cool, but the research librarian needs a little shoring up. He has this bad habit of devaluing everything he tells us to do. He'll tell us how to cite something and then turn right around and say "Well I won't mark you down for forgeting to underline or if a comma is out of place or so on and so forth" I'm like what!!! We are supposed to be learning for our careers not for whether or not he wants to cut us slack for doing it wrong. This was only one example of several throughout the presentation. He seems like a really nice guy and I'm sure he knows his stuff, but students expect value from their teachers and if he keeps devalueing then he is going to lose everyones attention.

An honor code violation? Boy, I don't think I would like that. Ours encouraged us to share with out fellow students and get as many opinions as possible. I don't mean to insinuate that any of my profs are bad, they aren't. In fact they are all so good that I have to nitpick the tiniest little mistake to satisfy my need to bitch.

UNLV to be a "nationally recognized tier 1 school in a short time" ....ROFL!
Once the applicants start thinking "Harvard? UNLV? Harvard? UNLV?"...then maybe...but I don't think this is going to happen for, let's say...2,000 years!

Perhaps you would rather go to a school that aspires to be a third or fourth tier school? In my case I live and work here thus I would be going to UNLV nontheless. It is nice to know that they have lofty goals and are well on their way to attainig them. There are a lot of first tier schools besides HYS.
