#214 - 01/21/02 09:28 AM Law Review at Tier 2 or transfer to Top 10?

I can't figure out which would be better. I am in a position to transfer to a top 10 school after 1L (if my grades stay up), and will likely grade on to law review at the tier 2 I am currently at. But with my career goals - working in mid to large law firms, possibly in DC, but probably more locally - I am not sure which would be better. Staying at the local tier 2 and on law review would all but ensure a great local job, but going to the local top 10 would also do the same, wouldn't it? And I might want, at some point, to work in somewhere like NYC, and the top 10 would allow that to happen.

Any thoughts?

Since you seemed concerned about the quality of your current law school, you probably should go ahead and transfer. There is not point to going to a school that you don't enjoy.

If you want to work in D.C., I would think that Georgetown and Virginia would be excellent choices (although you can go to DC from any Top 14).

By the way, this type of question would get several responses on the PR board (not meant as a flame).

I don't think that transferring is such a good idea. You may lose most of your grades from the first year and you have no guarantee that you'll do well at the other school. If you graduate and get on law review from a second tier school, that is very impressive and will guarantee you a great local job. Having said that, you are not limited to your area either. Go to martindale.com and look up alumni from your school in all states and you'll see that they are working all over the US.

Why do you feel you'll automatically be accepted at a top 10 from a second tier? Were you already accepted at a top 10 and declined to take the second tier? Even with graduating in the top 5%, I think it's a bit of a stretch to think you'll jump right to a top 10.

There's an old saying, "...the devil you know..." And another saying, "...the grass is always greener..." Okay, I'm rambling now, but what I was actually TRYING to say was why worry about it now? Why not go ahead and apply, pay the application fee, and see what happens? If you get in, then make a decision at that time -- if you don't, then you're no worse off than you were before, and you won't have wasted time agonizing over it.
